Chapter 4.

Their plan was simple, as were the best kinds of plans. Darling seemed to be able to tell when the door was about to open, so next time a tray was delivered Zack would jam the tray in the door so it couldn’t close, force the door open and over-power the big alien, and then they would find the cockpit and go home. Darling’s home, anyway.

Zack didn’t expect it to go quite that smoothly, and his secret plan was even simpler. The big alien had to die, even if Zack died too. Darling knew how to get home, and would. Everyone – which is to say Darling – would live happily ever after.

The door opened, Zack shoved the tray back into it and put his shoulder to the door, and then all hell broke loose. Searing pain cut through his shoulder, and alarms sounded. That confused Zack for a moment. Why would a ship with only one occupant have an alarm system? Darling screamed and covered its ears, curling up against Zack’s body, getting in his way.

Zack pushed Darling away and tackled the big alien, wrestling with it for the weapon it had in its hand, trying to immobilize it, and had almost succeeded when he heard heavy footsteps running down the dark hall towards them. Desperation lent him strength, and he pointed the weapon in the direction of whatever was coming at them and fired. Fortunately weapon design didn’t vary too much across the universe, and the second big alien screamed and fell.

Darling. Where was Darling? He couldn’t see in the darkness, but Darling must be able to. Just as he was about ready to panic a little hand gripped his, and a familiar head tucked into his chest. He pulled himself up so that he was sitting, leaning against the side of the hall, and tried to assess his injuries. He didn’t have any feeling in one side, and one arm appeared to have been sliced open. Not good. He tried to project calm and happiness to Darling, but all he got back was confusion.

That was when he learned that Darling could not, perhaps, count. All the little creature had ever seen at once was one big alien, therefore there was only one big alien. Darling was almost hysterical, blaming itself for getting Zack hurt. In full panic mode, it couldn’t project any useful images. Zack had been counting on his little friend to get them to the cockpit and out of here, now they were losing valuable time and who knew how many other alien creatures were headed their way?

He forced himself to take deep calming breaths, and moved Darling’s head towards his uninjured side, where it unerringly latched onto a nipple. When it seemed to be calmer he tried to get thoughts through to it of the cockpit and their need to get there, soon. He tried to block the thought of ‘while I’m still alive’.

Darling must have picked up some of the urgency, because it ran its hand over his chest and barely stifled a shriek when it felt his bloody wound.
